I’m Peter Filler, your Democratic candidate for Congress, and I’m here today to talk about a hidden tax that is punishing working families, crippling our infrastructure, and betraying the promise of a stronger economy. The administration promised you lower prices for America. But on what they call 'Liberation Day,' we got a trade war. They tell you these tariffs are a solution to trade deficits. I’m here to tell you the truth: Tariffs are not paid by foreign governments. Tariffs are a tax on Americans. They are a tax you pay every time you shop for groceries, every time you buy a new appliance, and most tragically, every time our government tries to build or repair vital American infrastructure. The Bridge That Shows the Price Tag. We saw the devastating collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The need for a new bridge was clear, urgent, and vital to our nation’s economy.Initially, estimates to replace that bridge were around $600 million dollars. That’s a massive project, but a necessary investment.But look at the reality today. Due to tariffs on the essential materials needed for construction—steel, aluminum, copper, specialized components—the estimated cost has doubled and soared far higher. Today, that bridge rebuild is projected to cost $1.2 billion or more!We are talking about hundreds of millions of dollars added to the cost of a national tragedy. Why? Because the administration declared a trade war, which instantly hiked the price of every single piece of imported steel and aluminum needed to construct the piers and the span.That difference—that $600 million difference—is the Tariff Tax. It’s wasted money. It’s money that could have rebuilt two bridges, or funded new schools right here in District 9, or invested in clean water projects. The Consequences Right Here in Houston This isn't just a Baltimore problem; this is a Houston problem. This is a Texas District 9 problem.
- Housing Affordability: Every tariff on lumber, steel, and appliances is a tax on a new home. It makes that down payment harder to save for and puts the dream of homeownership further out of reach for our families.
- Wasted Tax Dollars: Every local project—every road repair, every municipal upgrade—now costs our city and county more because we are forced to buy materials inflated by this self-inflicted economic wound.
The irony is cruel: while they talk tough on trade, the working men and women of America are paying the difference in higher construction costs, higher consumer prices, and slower infrastructure growth.My Commitment: Common-Sense TradeI am running for Congress to bring common sense back to Washington.
